  9. BLANK-IT(TM) came about when an associate asked if we knew of any screen savers
  10. that would not pass through the keystroke used to reactivate the screen, and 
  11. would work with all of the various types of monitors in his organization.
  12.  
  13. At first blush we assumed that, given the proliferation of screen saver
  14. programs, such a screen saver would be readily available.  After further 
  15. investigation and much frustration we realized that, despite the large quantity
  16. of screen savers available in the marketplace, none had the ability to suppress
  17. the reactivating keystroke and most were designed to work with specific types 
  18. of monitors.

  20. During our search we also noticed that, upon closer inspection, there were 
  21. other significant problems with these other screen savers including:
  22.  
  23.         * exorbitant memory consumption
  24.         * a lack of other significant features
  25.         * inability to keep the screen blank once it blanked
  26.         * system malfunction during high speed communications
  27.         * and other technical problems
  28.  
  29. Because a user might not know what input the computer awaits when then s/he 
  30. returns to a blank screen, a screen saver should never pass through the first 
  31. key that reactivates the screen.

  33. Most organizations that have a large quantities of computers tend to have many 
  34. different brands and models of computers in use.  Consistency in the daily 
  35. operation of a company's computers is extremely important, especially when the 
  36. computers are being used by an end user.  Therefore, we've designed BLANK-IT
  37. to work on all platforms so that many different screen savers are not necessary.

  39. And finally, it is our opinion that a screen saver should perform its function
  40. and do it the best.  A screen saver that displays cute fireworks is not any good
  41. if it hangs the system during a file transfer!  BLANK-IT has been written in 
  42. hand-optimized Assembler so that it performs consistently without timing 
  43. problems.  BLANK-IT has also been designed to keep the screen blank, considering
  44. its function, unlike others which blank the screen properly but then allow
  45. characters to begin showing up on the screen, or the entire screen to unblank 
  46. in some cases!

  50. After examining these other screen savers, which left us with the impression 
  51. that there was a severe quality problem despite the overabundance of different 
  52. products, we designed BLANK-IT with the intention of fulfilling one particular 
  53. need with a simple yet high quality product.
